I used to blog till a few months back, but the inanity of the whole thing got to me and so I stopped. However, now that I have a reasonably good excuse to blog I'll start again. Instead of blogging on general principles though, I plan to blog on something very specific. Cycles, cycling and cycling in Bangalore, to be precise.

I decided to start cycling in order to improve my general fitness level and being a child of the internet generation I tried to get some information about cycling in Bangalore. I managed to dig up a few websites which ranged from being useful to hilariously pointless.
Despite having this veritable fount of information , I still have a few questions, such as:
  • Yay! I want a cycle! Where do I buy one?
  • Yay! I want a cycle! Where do I get a cycling helmet?
  • Yay! I want a cycle! Where do I get elbow and knee guards?
  • Yay! I want a cycle! Does it make sense to cycle on Bangalore's wonderful roads?
  • Yay! I want a cycle! Should I settle for a goldfish instead? ( In a bowl. To stare at. Not to sit on and pedal )
I couldn't find the answer to most of these questions and so I've decided to happily use the free storage space Blogger is giving me to collect whatever information I do find. Hopefully this will prove useful to someone else.

Next: How does one actually go about buying cycling equipment in Bangalore? Where are the stores? How does one get there? Will Sourav Ganguly buy a cycle?

PS: For those of you who ( the very few ) who used to frequent this piece of internet real estate till I stopped blogging, a word of advice..... if you don't live in Bangalore and you aren't interested in cycling, this blog won't provide any entertainment.

# Yay! I want a cycle! Where do I buy one?
I used to buy cycles and cycle-accesories (last was when I was in 8th std., so info may be obsolete) from a couple of shops near (or at the end of) commercial street.

# Yay! I want a cycle! Does it make sense to cycle on Bangalore's wonderful roads? can get hit by other traffic, u can hit potholes, people, cows and get chased by confused dogs (this has happened to me!).

# Yay! I want a cycle! Should I settle for a goldfish instead? ( In a bowl. To stare at. Not to sit on and pedal )
You could learn swimming and chase fishes in a pool or you could run on a treadmill and stare at the goldfish.

dats easy...the shop near Alice Jewellery (near commercial street).
# Yay! I want a cycle! Does it make sense to cycle on Bangalore's wonderful roads?
try bylanes and maybe even parks if it is allowed.
# Yay! I want a cycle! Should I settle for a goldfish instead? ( In a bowl. To stare at. Not to sit on and pedal )
mmmm...Suraj's idea sounds tempting enough...but if ur serious about taking up cycling, its not gonna be as bad as it seems

Yay! I want a cycle! Where do I get a cycling helmet?
Yay! I want a cycle! Where do I get elbow and knee guards?
welll..i have'nt got any of the above...but im pretty sure you would get these at the sports store near the Richmond flyover.
have fun :)

Commercial street is the place to go... i bought my cycle there too!.. and as far as a good place to cycle is concerned, the city i bet must be a lot congested these days...I used to go on frequent 'cycle treks' on the roads that lead to the 'Big Banyan Tree'... I stopped by just because of your 'title'- cycling in b'lore, very close to my heart indeed! keep writing and help me get over home sickness :)

I am looking forward to starting cycling. But preferrably to go on expedition trips outside Bangalore - which still to a large extent is serene. Any ideas?

Commercial Street has one of the better concentration of cycle shops in the city.

I will strongly suggest buying cycle from a store that provides excellent service. Raja cycles near Townhall in Bangalore is one such place. Number is 080-22297180.

I am impressed with the fact that you have considerd cycling to work being in Bangalore. My name is Audi and I am doing it too. I cycle alt days to my office at Residency Rd. from JP Nagar. Infact I am thinkin if there was a way to popularize this among the young IT people who stay in the city but drive to work! Looking for a cycling club or something which would spread awareness bout the same. Also, organize short weekend trips. Fun is important too.
Please let me know if you think the same.

Hello Sridhar / Suraj / Audi
I did not know that there are so many people interested in cycling in Bangalore. I thought people here are interested only in SUV's.

I cycle to work almost everyday from Bannerghatta road to South end cirle. i have a FIREFOX RELOADED, 21 gears with front and rear shocks. Its a mountain bike... you need one for Bangalore roads. it takes me 25mins to cycle 8.5 kms in this traffic...faster than my car...takes almost 40mins.

getting hit by other traffic... quite true like Suraj says... but cant hep it, can we?

Weekend trips for fun like Audi suggests.... fantastic idea. would love to be a part of it.

I searched on google and came upon your page.

I am seriously looking to switch from my bike to bicycle for various reasons:
Ease of Traffic congestion
Health Reason
Eco friendly

However, I am not sure which model and what accessories I would need in order to sustain my daily commute to office and home.
I wanted to learn from the expereinces of other such initiative taking people in Bangalore and it would be really great to come across such people.

Do let me know.

Hi guys,

For any of you who are looking at buying imported road cycles like Colnago, Wheeler, Trek, Bianchi, CSK, Pls feel free to contact my husband Mr. Prasanna (better known as Pressy). You can contact him on +91-9342854422 or +91-8088984422 or you may also mail your requirements to him on

Pressy was an international cyclist. He has represented the state and the country at various championships.

To promote his interest to the others who were interested, he started dealing with Imported Racing bicyles for Track and Road, MTB's and accessories. He has been in this business for over 15 years now. Most of the leading professional cyclists across India are using cycles supplied by him.
